Chapters: 1721 Novels, Persian Letters, 1721 in Literature, an Universal Etymological English Dictionary. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Persian Letters (Lettres persanes, written 1721) is a satirical work by Charles de Secondat, baron de Montesquieu, recounting the experiences of two Persian noblemen, Usbek and Rica, who are traveling through France. In 1711 Usbek leaves his seraglio in Isfahan to undertake the long journey to France, accompanied by his young friend Rica. He leaves behind five wives (Zachi, Zéphis, Fatmé, Zélis, and Roxane) in the care of a number of black eunuchs, one of whom is the head or first eunuch. During the trip and their long stay in Paris (1712-1720), they comment, in letters exchanged with friends and mullahs, on numerous aspects of Western, Christian society, particularly French politics and mores, ending with a biting satire of the System of John Law. Over time, various disorders surface back in the seraglio, and beginning in 1717 (Letter 139 ), the situation there rapidly unravels. Usbek orders his head eunuch to crack down, but his message does not arrive in time and a revolt brings about the death of his wives, including the vengeful suicide of his favorite, Roxane, and, it appears, most of the eunuchs. The chronology breaks down as follows: The novel consisting of 150 letters appeared in May 1721 under the rubric Cologne: Pierre Marteau, a front for the Amsterdam publisher Jacques Desbordes whose business is now run by his widow, Susanne de Caux. Called edition A, this is the text utilized in the recent critical edition of Lettres persanes for the complete works of Montesquieu published by the Voltaire Foundation in 2004. A second edition (B) by the same publisher later in the same year, for which there is so far no

Excerpt: The Order of Sisters of Charity of Montreal, formerly called The Order of Sisters of Charity of the Hôpital Général of Montreal and more commonly known as the Grey Nuns of Montreal, is a Canadian order of Roman Catholic religious sisters. The order was founded in 1738 by Saint Marguerite d’Youville, a young widow. The order was founded when Marguerite d’Youville and three of her friends formed a religious association to care for the poor. They rented a small house in Montreal on 30 October 1738, taking in a small number of destitute persons. On 3 June 1753 the society received royal sanction, which also transferred to them the rights and privileges previously granted by letters patent in 1694 to the Frères Hospitaliers de la Croix et de Saint-Joseph, known after their founder as the Frères Charon. At that time they also took over the work of the bankrupt Frères Charon at the Hôpital Général de Montréal located outside the city walls. The city residents mocked the nuns by calling them “les grises” – a phrase meaning both “the grey women” and “the drunken women”, in reference to d’Youville’s late husband, François-Magdeleine You dYouville (1700-1730), a notorious bootlegger. Marguerite d’Youville and her colleagues adopted the particular black and brown dress of their order in 1755: despite a lack of grey colour, they kept the nickname once used to spite them. The rule given to Marguerite d’Youville and her companions by the Sulpician priest, Father Louis Normant de Faradon, P.S.S, in 1745 received episcopal sanction in 1754, when Monseigneur de Pontbriant formed the society into an official religious community. This rule forms the basis of the present constitution, which was approved by Pope Leo

The opera has two acts and its libretto loosely based on the 1934 play, La Balade du grand macabre, by Michel De Ghelderode was written by Ligeti in collaboration with Michael Meschke. The original libretto was written in German, and the opera has been performed also in Swedish, English, French and Italian. Unlike many operas, this one was written specifically with flexibility of language in mind. Only a few notes need be changed to perform the opera in any of these languages. After having seen Mauricio Kagel’s anti-operatic work Staatstheater, Ligeti came to the conclusion that it was not possible to write any more anti-operas. He therefore resolved to write an “anti-anti-opera”, an opera with an ironic recognition of both operatic traditions and anti-operatic criticism of the genre. It was a cold evening in November, when Mrs. Seldon, seated by a small fire, was anxiously waiting for her only son, who had left in the morning to ascertain whether he could find employment in a counting house in the city of New-York. Mrs. Seldon was the widow of a clergyman, who died when his son was in the twelfth year of his age, leaving him and his mother with a few hundred dollars, and an excellent library. Mr. Seldon had spared no pains in Henry’s education; and, at the early age of ten years, he had become acquainted, not only with the general rudiments of the English, but had made considerable advancement in the Latin, Greek, and French languages. Henry Seldon was beautiful as the morning; his eye was keen as the young eagle’s, at the same time soft as the beams of the setting sun. His hair was black and glossy as the raven’s, his brow was lofty, his mouth sweet and fascinating, his nose aquiline, and the general contour of hia face classical. His form was elegance and grace, and all who saw him loved him. His father and mother’s existence seemed identified with his; they lived in their son, and next to their Saviour, they loved him. One Sabbath, after Mr. Seldon returned from church, he complained of indisposition. A physician was called ; life lingered until morning, when he breathed his last sigh upon the bosom of his wife, in the full hope of a glorious resurrection. Henry in vain strove to comfort his mother, who, for a few hours, was in a fearfuldelirium. So sudden had been the blow, that her frame, like a tree twisted by the tempest, could only recover from the shock by the slow application of time. After she became composed, she summoned every effort of her mind and body for her son. Alone, they pursued the course they considered

“Like Trotsky, I did not leave home with the proverbial one-and-six in my pocket. I come from a family of landed gentry . . . [and] could have chosen the path of comfort and safety, for even in apartheid South Africa, there is still that path for those who will collaborate. But I chose the path of struggle and uncertainty.”—from the Preface Born into the small social elite of black South Africa, Phyllis Ntantala did not face the grinding poverty so familiar to other South African blacks. Instead, her struggle was that of a creative, articulate woman seeking fulfillment and justice in a land that tried to deny her both. The widow of Xhosa writer and historian A.C. Jordan and mother of African National Congress leader Z. Pallo Jordan, she and her family experienced a period of tremous change in South Africa and also in the United States, where they moved during the 1960s. She discovers similarities in the two countries, including the arrogance of power. Anchored in history and culture, A Life’s Mosaic sharply reveals the world and the people of South Africa. As the story of a political exile, it represents the dislocations that have caused universal suffering in the second half of the twentieth century. Phyllis Ntantala discusses the cruelty of racism, the cynicism of political solutions, and the hopes of those who live in both a world of exile and a world of dreams.\

ME. HEATON, SENIOR. The grandfather of the subject of our memoir was John Heaton of Ossett, who was born on September ’4, 1736. He married one Mary Metcalfe, a person in a somewhat superior position in life to himself, the daughter of Urban Metcalfe, a cloth manufacturer of Hunslet; which was then, as will have been gathered from the particulars given in the preceding chapter, a small manufacturing village. It was probably the fact of his having married this Hunslet bride, who there is reason to believe was in a small way an heiress, that induced John Heaton to remove from Ossett to the spot where his wife had been born. At all events he settled in Hunslet very soon after his marriage to Mary Metcalfe in July 1765, and remained in or near Leeds for the rest of his days. Three children were born of the marriage, the eldest being John Heaton, the father of Dr. Heaton, born July 22, 1769. The two other children were a son William, and a daughter Hannah. ‘In the year 1783,’ says Dr. Heaton in hisjournal, ‘ my grandfather purchased part of the small estate in Hunslet which I now (1859) possess. His father-in-law, Urban Metcalfe, was residing on it at the time ; his name as tenant being mentioned in the conveyance. My grandfather himself afterwards resided on his own property, and his widow continued to live there after his death. He died August 1st, 1790, and was buried in the graveyard attached to the chapel at Hunslet, then a chapel- of-ease to the Leeds parish church. His will makes his widow and my father executors. He leaves

And Ruth said, ‘ Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.’ –Ruth 1:16 During a cold Massachusetts winter, a man’s car fatally skids on black ice, leaving a mother childless and her daughter-in-law a widow. Naomi and Ruth, bound together as kin, are now each other’s only comfort. Naomi lost her own husband, Eli, eight years ago, and now she has lost her son. Watching Ruth struggle through grief, Naomi suddenly realizes what she must do to make herself whole again: She must return to her childhood home in coastal South Carolina. There, she remembers, was the innocence of youth and first falling in love. But when she tells Ruth about her plan, she receives an unexpected reply: Where you go, I will go. Where you live, that’s where I’ll live too. So the two women plan the journey together. The only family Naomi has down South are in-laws, people she hasn’t seen in decades, having kept in touch over the years only through annual Christmas cards. But when she phones, apprehensively, to tell them of her plan, they welcome her with openness and warmth. Arriving at a home full of sons and daughters and grandchildren, Naomi and Ruth are flooded with a love they are nearly too fragile to accept. Yet Naomi carries a deep secret in her soul–and not even this change of scenery can erase its dark shadow. As the long Southern days seep into their hearts, both she and Ruth begin to find themselves reawakened. And as the love of her newfound family and her enduring bond with Ruth prove themselves stronger than sin, stronger thanheartache, redemption finds Naomi once and for all. A Song I Knew by Heart is about the healing power of family–in particular, the bond between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. As Ruth and Naomi share their individual sorrows, together they find an uncommon strength. The pages of

 A Widow's Walk: A Memoir of 9/11

A Widow’s Walk: A Memoir of 9/11

$0.99

On September 11, I dropped my son off at his second full day of kindergarten. The sky was so blue it looked as if it had been ironed. I crossed the street, ordered coffee, and sat to wait for my husband to meet me. It was our eighth wedding anniversary and Dave and I were about to begin a new chapter in our seventeen years together. Sipping coffee, I watched as a line of thick black smoke crept across the sky from Manhattan, oblivious to the fact that my life was about to change forever. On September 11, 2001, Marian Fontana lost her husband, Dave, a firefighter from the elite Squad 1 in Brooklyn, in the World Trade Center attack. A Widow’s Walk begins that fateful morning, when Marian, a playwright and comedienne, became a widow, a single mother, and an unlikely activist. Two weeks after 9/11, the city attempted to close Squad 1, which had suffered the loss of twelve men. Known for her feisty spirit and passionate loyalty, Marian, who was still reeling from her profound loss, began to mobilize the neighborhood to keep the firehouse open. From this unlikely platform the 9/11 Widows and Victims’ Families Association grew. Over the next twelve months, Marian struggled with the tragedy’s endless ripple effects, from the minute and deeply personal — she wonders who will play Star Wars with her son, Aidan, and carry him on his shoulders; to the collective: she works to get families and widows necessary information about the recovery effort and attends private meetings with Governor Pataki, Mayor Giuliani, Senator Clinton, and Mayor Bloomberg. Through it all, Marian’s irrepressible humor is her best armor, as well as evidence of her buoyant strength. Written with great heart and humanity, A Widow’s Walk is a timely opportunity for remembrance and a timeless testament to love’s loss and the resilience of the human spirit.

A woman compelled. . . In the glittering world of Regency England, Anne Wilder played a dangerous game. A widowed lady by day, by night she became a masked thief preying on society’s elite. She roved high above London’s black rooftops, compelled by phantoms from her past to take ever greater risks. Until her restless spirit led her into Colonel Jack Seward’s trap. . . where seduction was her only way out. A man obsessed. . . She’d played him for a fool, taking advantage of his hungry response to escape from his clutches. But as Jack hunted for his thief, his heart fell captive to a self-possessed widow. Torn between illicit passion and tender love, Jack is duty-bound to capture the audacious criminal, even if it means ripping society apart to do so. Now he stalked her through the ton, never realizing the lovely widow who captured his heart was the same woman who roused his most violent passions. A love that defied king and country. . .

In this comprehensive portrait of the women of Chechnya in modern war, Paul Murphy argues that they are the principal victims of the 1994 and 1999 wars with Russia and the present conflict with Islamic jihadists. War forced Chechen women to venture far beyond their traditional roles and advance their human rights, but the current movement championing traditional Islam is taking those rights away. The book challenges conventional thinking on why women fight and are willing to kill themselves in the name of Allah. Drawing on personal interviews, insider resources, and other materials, Murphy presents powerful portrayals of women who fight in the Chechen jihad, including snipers and the mysterious Black Widow suicide bombers, as well as women who collect intelligence, hide arms, and perform other noncombatant roles. –Publisher”s description.

ICE AGE: A star-studded cast provides the voices for the prehistoric creatures in this computer-animated feature set 20,000 years ago as the Ice Age approaches. Seemingly antisocial Manny, a woolly mammoth (voiced by Ray Romano), acts as if he just wants to be left alone. When he meets Sid (voiced by John Leguizamo), a sloth, the two become unlikely traveling companions. The plot thickens when the two find a human infant and decide to try to return the child to its herd. Manny slowly but surely reveals his heart of gold, while Sid continues to provide comic relief. Diego (voiced by Denis Leary), a saber-tooth tiger with ulterior motives, soon joins them in their search for the humans. Ultimately, this group of misfits becomes its own herd, learning about friendship and loyalty as they brave snow, ice, freezing temperatures, predators, hail, and even boiling lava pits. All the while, a saber-tooth squirrel, Scat, provides comic relief as he valiantly struggles with an acorn. A well-written, humorous script and endearing characters mesh well with the state-of-the-art technology and effects. Other stars lending their voices to the feature include Goran Visnjic, Jack Black, and Jane Krakowski.THUMBELINA: Hans Christian Andersen’s tale is brought to life in this animated adaptation. When tiny Thumbelina is born to the widow Hobbs, Percival the Pig grows jealous and has a bullfrog kidnap the tiny girl. Her adventures bring her in contact with all sorts of unusual characters.BARTOK THE MAGNIFICENT: Bartok, the lovable albino bat from Don Bluth and Gary Goldman’s ANASTASIA, returns in BARTOK THE MAGNIFICENT, his own animated musical adventure. Propelled on a hero’s journey, Bartok (Hank Azaria) must rescue the young heir to the Russian throne, Prince Ivan (Phillip Van Dyke). However, he must first deal with the shady Ludmilla (Catherine O’Hara), who wants the throne for herself, and face a series of tasks and adventures set for him by the wacky–and possibly evil–witch o

 Architecture In Britain

Architecture In Britain

$50

While providing an historical background to each period, Lucy Archer’s study is not so much a history of early British architecture as a near-exhaustive guide to the secular and religious buildings from the Saxon, Norman, and Medieval periods that survive and can be visited. 300 black and white photographs by the late Edwin Smith, selected by his widow Olive Cook, a glossary of architectural terms, and a gazetteer covering thousands of sites in Britain and Ireland make this an invaluable work of reference as well as an invitation to travel and to discover. This beautifully produced book, the first of Lucy Archer’s projected three-volume survey and the result of a life-long study of the subject, is a work that will be of inestimable value to anyone with an interest in architecture, from the professional architect to the general reader keen to know more about Britain’s heritage.

And she thought of the little naked birds in the deserted nest; of her poor little neglected brothers; of Anania’s treasure; of midsummer night; and of her dead mother. She was afraid—she was sad, so sad that though she believed herself doomed to hell, she longed to die. Ol!’s son was born at Fonni in the springtime. He was called Anania by the advice of his godmother, the bandit’s widow. He passed his infancy at Fonni, and in his imagination never forgot that strange village perched on the mountain crest, like a slumbering vulture. During the long winter, Fonni was all snow and fog ; but with the spring grass invaded even the steep village street, where beetles slept among the big, sun-warmed cobblestones, and ants ran confidingly in and out of their holes. The meagre brown houses with their roofs of scandtde (wooden tiles overlapping each other like fish- scales), showed on the street side narrow black doorways, balconies of rotten wood, little stairs often vine-garlanded. The Basilica of the Martyrs, with its picturesque belfry, rose among the green oaks of the old Convent court, dominating the whole little town and carved against a sky of crystalline blue. Fabulous beauty reigned on all sides. The tall mountains of the Gennargentu, their luminous summits outlined as it were with silver, crowned the great Barbagia valley, which in a succession of immense green shells rose to the hill-topS; among these Fonni with its scaled roofs and stony streets, defied the thunder and the winds. The district was in winter almost deserted, for its numerous population of wandering shepherds (men strong as the blast, and astute as foxes) descended with their flocks to the warm

During the 1970s, a black power organization in Bermuda conspired to bring about social change by any means necessary, including assassination. As a result, Governor Sir Richard Sharples was murdered, as well as Police Chief George Duckett and others. This investigative book is based on interviews with police officers involved in the investigations, as well as interviews with prison officers familiar with the assassins. Additional material was gleaned from Scotland Yard murder files, newspaper archives, court records, and an interview with the widow of Sharples. This is the first full account of the murders and the Black Beret Cadre, the revolutionary group whose activities resulted in mayhem throughout the island.

The B.C. Rich Metal Master Kerry King V features a maple, bolt-on neck; solid, beveled basswood body; widow style headstock; a rosewood fretboard with white pearloid dot lnlays and 24 jumbo frets; a wrap around fixed bridge; and 2 BDSM humbuckers.Bolt-on ConstructionThe Metal Master Kerry King V uses a classic Bolt-on construction. The maple neck is bolted on with 4 screws to the body. This construction offers some added flexibility in the instruments adjustment and provides the option to change the neck in the future.B.C. Rich BDSM PickupsB.C. Rich designed their BDSM humbucking pickups to provide a solid sound and to be durable while delivering high output. BDSM stands for Broad Dynamic Sonically Matched. That simply means the pickup is designed to reproduce a wide range of frequencies accurately (broad dynamic). Then they are tested and matched in pairs (neck and bridge) by their inherent individual and signature tonal and output characteristics to give a solidly balanced tone (sonically matched).Beveled TopThe Metal Master Kerry King V employs a beveled edge around the shape. In many ways, bevels on a top are similar to facets on a cut stone. They catch the light and reflect at different angles giving the instrument more of a three dimensional look.
